Humans are the most social beings on earth. But we are also the most selfish. As part of our social/selfish paradox, we are constantly resolving the tensions within ourselves between getting ahead and getting along. Just how we do that depends on our personality types.

When people are granted permission to develop the strengths of their personality, they’re better able to develop a strong leadership style. We can relate this notion to left-handedness versus right-handedness. If you force a left-handed person to write with their right hand, they’ll never reach their full penmanship potential.

Likewise, when people are expected to conform to a particular set of behaviours, they may never develop to their full potential. When it comes to leadership style, they may develop counter-productive behaviours that will alienate people instead of inspire them.

 

Here are just a few reasons why it is important to understand your personality type in the workplace.

 

Better decision making

We often make decisions on spur of the moment thought influenced by our personality type. By understanding your personality type you will be better informed to make the right decisions. For example, emotional types should think twice before reacting to a situation. Check in with themselves and ask if their decision is emotional or logical.

 

Better task delegation

Most personality types can’t handle specific tasks. Therefore, you should delegate the tasks you know someone else in your team would be better at doing. For instance, a mediator type personality is not motivated by tasks that are data-driven. In understanding this, a leader can delegate data-driven tasks to team members who can handle it better.

 

Better team building

You can even use your personality metrics to shape your team. This gives you a higher chance of building a more cooperative and safe culture. For example, leaders who are open minded and emotionally intelligent can leverage conflict to improve performance. Conversely, teams led by neurotic and closed-minded leaders tend to fall apart in the face of disagreement.

 

There isn’t much dispute over the idea that leadership style grows out of personality type. You can learn to use your personality type to tailor your leadership style. Then you can productively communicate your ideas and point of view to others who are not the same as you. But, you can’t do that effectively until you fully understand what your type is and embrace its potential.
